Travelling Light / Illuminating Captions

EXIT

The socio-political act of captioning pictures which have already been pre-selected by reference to the same value system is so effective that they work even when no longer present. They become the invisible captions of Western power and culture.

You will find many kinds of images in many different contexts here. You will find photographs without captions - you can write your own; captions without photographs; - you can imagine your own and photographs of missing photographs with captions, the invisible more eloquent than the visible.

All of them will help cast light on the nature of photographic images and the place we assign them. While it is axiomatic that a caption can alter the reception of a photograph and can even subvert the original intention of the photographer entirely, adding title, caption or text remains an important strategy when artists wish to contextualise their work or give it a referential soundbox within which its meanings can resonate.
